How We Built a Strong Homeschool in Math, English, and Science (K1–KS3 Resources)
Hello there,
Homeschooling is a journey of discovery—not only for children, but for parents as well. One of the most important parts of that journey is finding learning resources that are clear, engaging, and structured enough to guide both the student and the parent.
Over the years, we have explored a variety of educational materials, but one publisher has remained a constant favourite in our homeschool: Collins. Their books have played a key role in helping us build a strong foundation in Math, English, and Science, while encouraging independent learning and curiosity.
In this post, I would like to share why these resources became an important part of our homeschool, how we use them in our daily learning routine, and how they helped us continue learning even during challenging times.
Beginning Our Homeschool Journey
When we first started homeschooling, one of my biggest questions was: Which resources should we use?
In a traditional classroom, teachers guide every step of the learning process. At home, however, parents must carefully choose materials that explain concepts clearly while allowing children to work independently.
We were looking for books that were:
- Comprehensive and well-structured
- Engaging for children
- Easy to follow without constant supervision
- Suitable for building strong foundations in core subjects
This search eventually led us to Collins books. From the very beginning, we appreciated how clearly the topics were explained and how the exercises gradually built confidence in the student.
Interestingly, I found myself learning alongside my daughter. Homeschooling often brings parents back to subjects they may not have studied in years, and these books helped refresh my understanding as well.
The Role of Structured Learning at Home
One of the biggest advantages of these resources is the structure they provide.
In homeschooling, structure helps maintain consistency and ensures that important concepts are not missed. The books guide students step by step through each topic, building knowledge gradually and logically.
This approach has been especially helpful in mathematics, where strong foundations are essential for understanding more advanced topics later on.
But beyond mathematics, the structure also supports learning in English and Science, helping children develop reading comprehension, writing skills, and curiosity about the world around them.
Learning Through the COVID Lock-downs
Like many families around the world, we faced unexpected challenges during the COVID lock-downs.
Libraries—one of our most valuable learning resources—became inaccessible, and it was suddenly difficult to obtain the materials we needed for our lessons.
At that time, I decided to contact the Collins help desk to ask whether they had any digital resources available.
To my surprise and gratitude, they responded with kindness and support. They provided electronic copies of some of their materials, which allowed us to continue studying at home.
These resources proved incredibly helpful in preparing my daughter for her KS2 Cambridge Primary Checkpoint, ensuring that her learning remained consistent even during such uncertain times.
Their support reminded me how important access to quality educational materials can be, especially when families are navigating challenges.
How We Use These Resources in Our Homeschool
Over time, we developed a simple and effective system for using these books as part of our daily homeschool routine.
A typical lesson in our home often follows this process:
1. Introducing the Concept
We begin by reading the explanation of the topic in the book. The examples help clarify the concept and give us a starting point for discussion.
Sometimes we pause to talk about the ideas presented; making sure the concept is clearly understood before moving forward.
2. Practice and Application
After understanding the concept, my daughter works through the exercises provided in the book.
These practice questions reinforce the lesson and allow her to apply what she has learned. Practice is particularly important in mathematics, where repetition helps build accuracy and confidence.
3. Additional Practice Materials
In some cases, I prepare additional worksheets or practice questions to strengthen understanding.
These extra materials help reinforce key ideas and ensure that the concepts are fully understood before moving on.
4. Assessments and Mock Tests
Assessments are an important part of our homeschool system.
Using the topics covered in the books as a guide, I prepare short quizzes, tests, and mock checkpoint assessments. These help us track progress and identify areas that may need more attention.
They also prepare students for formal examinations by helping them become comfortable with test-style questions.
Creating Custom Homeschool Assessments
Over time, I began creating a collection of custom assessments based on the subjects we were studying.
These include:
- Topic-based quizzes
- End-of-unit tests
- Mock checkpoint assessments
- Practice worksheets and problem sets
Designing these materials allows us to tailor the learning process to our needs. Every child learns at a different pace, and homeschooling provides the flexibility to adjust lessons accordingly.
These assessments also help children build confidence by giving them opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned.
Subjects Covered in Our Homeschool Resources
Through this process, I gradually developed structured learning materials that support three core subjects:
Mathematics
Mathematics lessons focus on building strong foundations, developing problem-solving skills, and preparing students for checkpoint assessments.
English
English activities include reading comprehension, grammar practice, and writing exercises that help children express their ideas clearly and confidently.
Science
Science lessons encourage curiosity and exploration while introducing important concepts about the natural world.
Together, these subjects form a balanced approach to learning that supports both analytical thinking and creativity.
Sample Resources from Our Homeschool
In this post, I am sharing a few sample resources from our homeschool journey.
Homeschool Resources Available (K1–KS3)
Over time, I have developed a collection of structured homeschool resources that support learning across different levels.
These materials include resources for:
K1 Foundations
- Early mathematics skills
- Basic reading and writing
- Introduction to simple science concepts
KS2 Resources
- Mathematics practice and assessments
- English comprehension and writing exercises
- Science learning materials and practice questions
KS3 Resources
- Advanced mathematics topics and mock assessments
- English language development and writing practice
- Science concepts that strengthen analytical thinking
These resources are designed to help children build confidence, develop independent learning habits, and prepare for academic checkpoints and exams.
Supporting Other Homeschool Families
Homeschooling can be deeply rewarding, but it can also feel overwhelming at times—especially when parents are trying to design lessons, assessments, and study plans on their own.
One of the reasons I began sharing these materials is to support other families who are walking a similar path.
Having access to structured resources can make the homeschool journey smoother and more enjoyable for both parents and children.
Final Thoughts
Our homeschooling journey has been filled with learning, patience, and growth. Along the way, we discovered that the right educational resources can make a tremendous difference.
Collins books have helped us build a strong foundation in Math, English, and Science, while encouraging curiosity and independent learning.
If you are a homeschooling parent interested in structured resources and assessments for K1, KS2, or KS3, feel free to reach out. I would be happy to share more information and explore how these materials might support your homeschool journey.
